Kolkata: Panel for rehab of Bowbazar traders

KOLKATA: A committee has been set up to identify those who have suffered loss in business because of the subsidence caused by the East-West Metro construction at Bowbazar’s Durga Pithuri Lane on May 11 when several buildings were damaged and around 160 residents were displaced. The buildings that housed jewellery units developed cracks.

“The civic body has set up a seven-member committee to identify persons who suffered business loss following the cave-in,” said local councillor Biswaroop Dey, who is coordinating the jewellers’ rehabilitation.

The committee has De, three officials from KMC’s buildings, assessment and licence departments and three representatives from Kolkata Metro Railway Corporation (KMRC). Itwill list the “project-affected persons”(PAPs). Those who feature on the list will look for alternative space in the area while ITD will foot the rent bills.

“We hope that the civic body makes the list soon. We are incurring huge losses daily. I have asked my labourers to fend for themselves. It’s so difficult to find a shop in Bowbazar. My unit was in my own house. But now, the cost of a commercial space will be very high,” said Santosh Shaw, a jeweller.
