Kolkata: Biker dies trying to save med student

KOLKATA: A 27-year-old biker, taken by surprise when an aspiring doctor suddenly tried to cross the road to reach his hostel even when the signal was green, lost his life while trying to avoid the accident.

Cops said the two-wheeler rider, Bidyut Mistri who worked at a private firm, was returning home on Monday evening when the incident took place near the ESI Hospital Joka Main Gate on the Pailan-Bishnupur bound flank of Diamond Harbour Road, about a kilometer from IIM Joka. Having suffered severe internal injuries, Mistri died on Wednesday evening despite being shifted to a south Kolkata nursing home.

"The medical student, Sk Sabbir Hussain (19), was in a hurry to cross the road around 6.45pm. When a bus stopped to pick up passengers, Hussain tried running across in front of it. Mistri who was trying to cross the bus from the right saw Hussain and applied the brakes in panic. The bike hit Hussain, but Mistri fell down, receiving severe head injuries. Both were rushed to ESI Hospital and then to a Bhowanipore nursing home. The biker could not be saved," said an officer.
