After watching West Virginia fall in epic fashion on Thursday night, ESPN’s Pat McAfee could barely contain his disappointment in his alma mater on Friday’s The Pat McAfee Show.
A crushing, game-winning Hail Mary from Houston set the stage for both the Mountaineers and McAfee to receive an ample amount of trolling as the weekend approached. And, unfortunately for McAfee, Friday’s show included an appearance from Kirk Herbstreit, who clearly couldn’t get enough of watching his ESPN College GameDay co-analyst squirm.
“What happened there? Did you guys already review this,” Herbstreit asked with a smile, knowing the play had been a topic since the show began.
McAfee and Herbstreit then hilariously discussed the sequence, to which the longtime GameDay host re-iterated the joy he gets out of watching WVU and the Colts, McAfee’s NFL home for nine seasons, struggle.
“It’s not like I hate West Virginia,” continued Herbstreit. “Like, I want the guy to make the field goal so bad. You know, I’m just, having fun cheering against you.”
From there, Herbstreit added to the roast with jokes about Houston coach Dana Holgorsen beating his old team, calling the TD a “fluke” and how the catch could’ve been defended better. Herbstreit’s last rib, though, had the entire crew in stitches.
“You guys had a magical season going too, damn,” he said. “ … I’m proud of you guys. Every week you’re out to prove everybody wrong, you came so close last night (laughs).”

With WVU’s loss still so fresh and shocking, it’s more than likely McAfee will hear more from Herbstreit and the rest of the Saturday crew when GameDay takes the air for Oregon-Washington.
