Plans for tougher sentences for killers, rapists and grooming gang ringleaders are not simply a bid for votes ahead of the next general election, the Justice Secretary has insisted.

With a nationwide poll expected next year, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has put a series of criminal justice laws at the heart of the King’s Speech, in an attempt to draw dividing lines with Sir Keir Starmer’s Labour.
