King Charles III speaks of love for Harry and Meghan in inaugural speech

King Charles III has spoken of his love for his song Harry and wife Meghan in his first speech as the sovereign of the UK. The 73 year old was speaking to the nation on Friday (September 9) following the death of his mother.

The King used the occasion to pay his solemn respects to his hardworking mother after her 70 years on the throne. But he touched a warm, personal note, too, when he brought up his sons, William and Harry.

On William, he said: “As my Heir, William now assumes the Scottish titles which have meant so much to me. He succeeds me as Duke of Cornwall and takes on the responsibilities for the Duchy of Cornwall which I have undertaken for more than five decades.

“Today, I am proud to create him Prince of Wales, Tywysog Cymru, the country whose title I have been so greatly privileged to bear during so much of my life and duty. With Catherine beside him, our new Prince and Princess of Wales will, I know, continue to inspire and lead our national conversations, helping to bring the marginal to the centre ground where vital help can be given."

On his controversial younger son, he praised their non-royal lives in California, adding: “I want also to express my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives overseas."

It was a touching moment after several years of a reported breakdown in relationships between the Royal household and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex following their move to the US.

King Charles also mentioned his affection for his second wife: "I count on the loving help of my darling wife, Camilla. In recognition of her own loyal public service since our marriage 17 years ago, she becomes my Queen Consort.

“I know she will bring to the demands of her new role the steadfast devotion to duty on which I have come to rely so much."
