A generous football club steward has donated his first pay packet to a foodbank. The man, called Ian, said he wanted to help others.
In a note with the donation, he said it was his first ever pay packet, received after working at his first game on Saturday as Liverpool thrashed Bournemouth 9-0. He added that he wanted to "help someone else have a better day".
The donation was revealed on the Fans Supporting Foodbanks twitter account, which shared the heart-warming moment after the game. They said: "Tales of humility. Loaded the van after yesterday's matchday collection when one of the head stewards approached us and gave us an envelope. Inside that envelope was a card and a donation from a steward of his first ever pay from Liverpool FC. LFC your staff are one of your greatest assets."
Fans Supporting Foodbanks is a project aimed at collecting food and essential items for foodbanks before and after football matches. The group was formed in Liverpool by West Derby MP Ian Byrne, Dave Kelly and Robbie Daniels. The project has now been expanded around the country, reports the LiverpoolECHO.
The account also shared an image of the card, with a message inside from the steward, Ian. It read: "For helping others, I have enclosed my first eve pay as an LFC steward, to hopefully help someone else have a better day. Take care, Ian."
Explaining how the moment happened, Fans Supporting Foodbanks co-founder Robbie Daniels said: "One of the security fellas came over to me and asked for a word in private, he said Ian was overwhelmed at what we do and he wanted to do his bit and handed me the envelope with the card in it and the £50 quid."
The post has been widely shared on social media, with many praising the steward's generous act. Fans Supporting Foodbanks co-founder and MP Ian Byrne said: "It’s a wonderful example of humanity in difficult times for so many by Ian. It’s acts like this which restore your faith in humanity and it perfectly encapsulates the ethos of Fans Supporting Foodbanks."
The group also shared a second tale of kindness from the weekend. They explained that a lady called Jacqui called up and asked if there was a way they could collect a large donation that was too big to drop off before the match.
They explained: "We called to the house and collected the donation. She explained that her mother was a regular donor to the Foodbank but had sadly passed away. They decided that they would have family flowers only but would invite mourners to donate to Fans Supporting Foodbanks in her mother's memory. What a magnificent gesture from a grieving family to think of others in need. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, May your Mother RIP."
