Kilmarnock bus station abandoned by Stagecoach after youth gangs cause 'serious' chaos

Kilmarnock bus station has been abandoned by Stagecoach after youth gangs have been causing chaos at the terminal.

The coach firm won't be picking up or dropping off passengers tonight following 'serious anti-social behaviour' from large groups of youths.

The complete evacuation of the station took place shortly after 6pm.

Stagecoach West Tweeted: "Unfortunately due to serious anti-social behaviour by large groups of youths, no services will be picking up or dropping off in Kilmarnock Bus Station after 6pm.

"The safety of our staff and customers is paramount so the decision has been made to use alternative bus stops out with the bus station. A list of where our evening will be leaving from will follow."

East Ayrshire Councillor Barry Douglas fumed at the development and insisted that the community can't let yobs 'win'.

He wrote on Facebook: "Unbelievable steps to be taken by Stagecoach but I completely understand why.

"This isn’t a new problem but it seems to be getting worse and worse, we cannot let those perpetrating anti-social behaviour to 'win'.

"When people say 'there’s nothing for the weans' I have to say from anecdotal evidence and some first hand experience the young people hanging around the bus station and local parks tell us they don’t want to go to anything 'organised' they want to hang about.

"As a teenager I wouldn’t have wanted to go to organised clubs or events but I certainly had more respect than to cause widespread anti-social behaviour.

"I would ask parents and guardians of young people across the town and beyond to ask where your young person is going and what they are doing as this is getting seriously out of hand and needs a serious response!"

Ayrshire Live contacted Police Scotland this evening but no instances of anti-social behaviour today have been reported to the force.

Stagecoach have been contacted for comment.
