Killer Christa Pike's Death Sentence Could Be Overturned After She Survives a 'Torturous Attempt'

Christa Pike's lawyers are seeking to have her death sentence commuted to life imprisonment after Tennessee's failed attempt to execute her on 30 September 2026 left her critically ill and hospitalised. Pike, 50, remains unconscious and on a ventilator at a Nashville-area hospital, according to her attorneys.

The news came after a day of legal challenges. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit temporarily stayed the execution, but the U.S. Supreme Court later vacated that stay in a 6-3 decision, allowing Tennessee to proceed. Media witnesses later reported hearing Pike breathing more than an hour after the attempt began.
