Kevin De Bruyne equals Steven Gerrard record as Jack Grealish mocks Man City team-mate

Kevin De Bruyne has registered as many Premier League assists as Steven Gerrard after setting up two goals in Manchester City's 3-0 win over Wolves on Saturday afternoon.

Pep Guardiola's side went top of the table thanks to goals from Jack Grealish, Erling Haaland and Phil Foden at Molineux. The result leaves City two points clear of Arsenal in second, although the Gunners can reclaim top spot with a win at Brentford on Sunday afternoon.

De Bruyne picked up his 91st and 92nd Premier League assists in the resounding victory, meaning he has the same amount as Liverpool icon Gerrard. That puts him joint-seventh on the all-time list, one spot behind Etihad legend David Silva, who wracked up 93 Premier League assists for City between 2012 and 2020.

Former Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs has registered the most assists in Premier League history - 162, to be precise - and World Cup winner Cesc Fabregas is second on all-time list after setting up 111 goals during his stints at Arsenal and Chelsea.

Ex-England captain Wayne Rooney (103 assists), Everton manager Frank Lampard (102) and Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp (94) are the other three players who make up the top six.

What's most impressive about De Bruyne's latest achievement is that the Belgium international needed just 217 Premier League games to reach his tally of assists. In comparison, Gerrard required 504 games to set up the same amount of goals.

De Bruyne's first assist on Saturday afternoon came inside the opening minute of the game when he teed up Grealish. The England international is under pressure to score more goals for City following his £100million move from Aston Villa 13 months ago.

Speaking to BT Sport at full-time, Grealish joked: "I'm always having a laugh with Kev, saying to him about assisting me. I said, 'Come on, you're meant to be the best assister in the world!' Luckily he came up to me today and said, 'There we go'."

Wolves had Nathan Collins sent off during the first half for a shocking tackle on Grealish. The Republic of Ireland international caught the City playmaker in his midriff with his right foot, with some fans describing the challenge as a "kung-fu kick".

On his goal, Grealish told BBC Sport: "I didn't know it was so early. Perfect start, getting my first goal of the season. The most important thing was to get three points. Wolves are a great team. It's a tough place to come. It was nice to start like that. It's always nice to get an early goal. When you score an early goal your confidence is much higher. I needed that."

Speaking to BBC Sport about his team's display, Guardiola said: "It is tough after the Champions League [win over Borussia Dortmund] at this time against this team because they have incredible quality, I know how difficult it is to come here and win, but we started well."

Guardiola added: "The red card allowed us to control it. They had a good spell at 2-0 and at that score the game was in a dangerous situation. The people up front like to score goals for their confidence. Jack was aggressive one versus one in the last games, but today he scored. That was the only difference."
