Tennessee Titans safety Kevin Byard has been one of the best ball-hawking defensive backs in the NFL during his career, and he showed that once again in Week 17 against the Dallas Cowboys.
Byard nabbed a pair of interceptions off Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott in the game, giving him a team-high four on the season.
However, they were also the 26th and 27th of his career, breaking the record for the most in the Titans era, surpassing former Titans safety Michael Griffin, who had 25.
Byard is 18 off the entire franchise record, which is held by former Houston Oilers defensive back Jim Norton, who had 45 from 1960-1968.
If the Titans safety can keep up the average pace of 4.5 per season that he has totaled over the last six years, he can get there over the next four seasons, assuming he remains on the team that long.
Byard has two more years left on his contract in 2023 and 2024 until he hits free agency in 2025, which will be his aged 32 season.
It’s safe to assume he’ll still be playing by then, and while there’s no question he should finish his career here, we all know nothing is promised in the NFL.
But if Byard can stick in Nashville for the remainder of his career, he’ll almost certainly break the record, and he’d likely have more than the aforementioned four years to do it.
