Kerala: Strong winds batter many parts of Kochi

KOCHI: Very strong wind accompanied by rain and thunder caused widespread damages in Thrikkakara, Tripunithura and Pattimattom fire station limits on Friday evening. Trees uprooted and fell over electric poles, vehicles and houses causing heavy damages and leading to traffic congestion in many areas.

Fire and rescue personnel responded to the calls and took hours for them to remove the trees from the roads to restore the traffic. Many places are in the dark since power was off. Fire force officials said the power can be restored only on Saturday since electric poles and cables got broken. Revenue officials said no one got injured in the incidents.

In the Infopark area, many trees uprooted over the main road causing traffic congestion for over two and half hours. Brahmapuram, Edachira, Thudiyoor, Chungath lane, Irumbanam, Udayamperoor and other areas witnessed huge damages due to trees falling over the vehicles, electric cables and roads. While IMD officials said they had issued warning earlier that Ernakulam would receive strong wind upto the speed of 45kmph on Friday.
