KOCHI: Renowned Indian ecologist Prof Madhav Gadgil said that the SilverLine project will affect the environment evidently and indirectly.
"Poor people will have to suffer the consequences of all this. However, the voices of protest raised by the people will not be in vain, he added.
Gadgil was delivering the Prof MK Prasad Endowment lecture organized online by the Maharaja's College on Monday. He said that the people's protests should be respected.
Former chairperson of the Kerala state biodiversity board VS Vijayan said that the project will affect the water bodies.
It is estimated that there will be a loss of Rs 98 lakh when a hectare of water body is destroyed.
Vijayan said that he had sent a letter to the chief minister listing out these facts. But there has been no reply from the government's end so far, he added.
