KOZHIKODE: Most households in Valavannur, Kalpakanchery and nearby panchayats in Malappuram on Tuesday binged on biryani, but for a cause. A mega biryani fest, organised to raise funds for the Energy Care Palliative and Physiotherapy Centre at Parakkal, Valavannur saw one lakh biryani packets being sold for Rs 1 crore.
The biryani challenge was undertaken to expand the physiotherapy centre opened eight months ago in view of a huge waiting list for free physiotherapy treatment offered there. The event turned into a massive show of solidarity by residents of six local bodies, with nearly 4,000 volunteers -- including students, local clubs, trauma care volunteers, women and various organisations -- pitching in to cook, pack and deliver the biryani packets.
