Anti-government protests in Kenya's capital have escalated, leading to clashes with a newly emerged pro-government group. The unrest, which has been ongoing for weeks, has resulted in numerous deaths, Cabinet dismissals, and calls for President William Ruto's resignation.

The protests initially began in response to a proposed tax bill that would further burden Kenyans already struggling with rising prices and economic challenges. The demonstrations have been predominantly led by youth activists demanding change.

In Nairobi, the epicenter of the protests, tensions flared as the pro-government group confronted anti-government demonstrators. The situation intensified near the main airport, where protesters set bonfires and blocked roads, prompting a response from law enforcement.

Despite police intervention, the protests have spread to other cities such as Mombasa, Kisumu, and Migori, underscoring the widespread discontent among Kenyan citizens.

The violence and unrest have taken a toll on the country, with reports of at least 50 deaths and hundreds of injuries since the protests began. The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights has documented these casualties and called for accountability and justice for the victims.

While President Ruto has taken some steps to address the protesters' demands, including rejecting the tax bill and reshuffling the Cabinet, calls for his resignation persist. The opposition, led by Raila Odinga, has expressed solidarity with the demonstrators and called for peaceful dialogue to resolve the crisis.

Despite police attempts to quell the protests, citing safety concerns, the high court has upheld the right to peaceful assembly as enshrined in Kenya's constitution. The situation remains volatile, with both sides adamant in their positions and the future uncertain.

As the protests enter their fifth week, the resolve of the demonstrators remains strong, with many vowing to continue their fight for change and accountability in Kenya's political landscape.
