Kate Garraway 's new BBC show will explain how Covid-19 ravaged her husband Derek's lung.
The 54-year-old is the host of BBC2 show Your Body Uncovered, and one episode of the medical series will take a look at how the virus can affect the body’s respiratory system.
The groundbreaking show uses virtual reality technology to look inside the body, giving viewers a lifelike perspective.
An upcoming segment in the show will focus on how the deadly virus affects the lungs, and during Tuesday night’s episode, Kate touched upon the devastating effects Covid has had on Derek.
“Having a serious health condition is terrifying and having someone you love with a serious health condition can be just as daunting,” she explained.
“When my husband Derek was diagnosed with Covid-19 it turned our lives upside down. And that fear was made even harder to bear because I didn't understand what was going on inside his body,” she added.
During an appearance on The One Show, the Good Morning Britain presenter confirmed that Your Body Uncovered would look at the lungs of Covid patients, and admitted she was sad that the scientific and medical discoveries weren’t available when Derek was severely ill.
“It’s fascinating to see how Covid effects the lungs, then how it spreads into the body. Gosh, if we had understood that from the start where would we be now?” she mused.
"When Derek got sick, it was not just the fear of him dying which was big and massive, it was the fear of, ‘What is it?’” Kate said, as she confessed fear was a “big chunk of the problem”, as her husband became seriously ill in the very early days of the global pandemic.
Kate has kept her fans updated on her husband’s recovery from Covid, and in her new ITV documentary Caring For Derek - a follow-up to her award-winning Finding Derek - the mother-of-two said their family is desperately hoping for the former political lobbyist to fully recover.
Kate said: “It took weeks and weeks of planning, and when I told Derek about this place he was excited.
“He is just so desperate to get better - he will do anything he can to make that happen,” she said, as she told viewers they had travelled to Mexico for a clinical trial, but didn’t want to make the news public as she didn’t want to offer up “false hope” to others suffering.
“But I’m just so desperate to be able to give a happy ending - for Derek mainly, but also for everybody who asks me every day how he’s getting on,” she said, becoming visibly emotional.
“I’m desperate to be able to tell them he’s getting better . . . but of course he’s not out of the woods yet,” Kate added.
