Kate Garraway has revealed the final words her husband Derek said to her as he thought he was about to die. The Good Morning Britain presenter has opened up about the heartbreaking moment in an emotional interview.
The 55-year-old has spoken publicly about his battle with coronavirus and the long-term impact it's having on him since he contracted it in 2020. Derek has become the UK's longest inpatient in a hospital, and he almost died after being diagnosed with sepsis.
And now she has opened up about what he believed was his final few moments, saying: "This is it, this time, I am gone," something Kate said was terrifying. He spent a large part of 2022 in hospital but is now being looked after at home.
Speaking to The Sun, she added: "His sepsis was gut-wrenching for all of us because it had gone undiagnosed until the point where it was about to take his life away again. Poor Derek's condition currently covers about 11 specialisms of medical care."
Recently Kate spoke about the financial hardships that she has been face with due to the high costs of caring for her husband. Since he returned from the hospital, they've forked out thousands to make their home suitable for him, writes The Mirror.
This includes installing a wet room downstairs and converting a downstairs room into his bedroom. In a bid to shut down any claims that the family had received priority treatment, Kate explained that Derek has been on NHS waiting lists like "everyone else" before adding it should always be that way.
