Karnataka: Teacher gets 3-year jail for caning 7-year-old girl in Tumakuru

TUMAKURU: A private school teacher who had severely punished a seven-year-old student has been sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment by the 3rd additional civil judge and JMFC court in Tumakuru.

The verdict was pronounced last month and released on Tuesday.

In a press release issued by the information department, around 3. 30pm on February17, 2011, the teacher, Farhat Fathima of Bharat Mata School in Idgah Mohalla of Tumakuru, caned a girl student for not studying properly, injuring the child in her left eye.

The girl’s parents filed a complaint with Tilak Park police station. Police sub-inspector Di- nesh Patil filed the FIR and after conducting a probe, submitted the chargesheet to the court.

Judge Sharada Koppad sentenced the teacher to three years in jail and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000. Assistant public prosecutor G Basavaraj said the teacher has paid the fine and has been released on bail.
