Karnataka High Court Urges Ranveer Singh to Act Responsibly After Kantara Mimicry Controversy

Following the incident, an FIR was registered against Ranveer, prompting the actor to approach the Karnataka High Court to challenge the complaint.

Karnataka HC’s Response

On Tuesday, February 24, under Justice M Nagaprasanna, the Karnataka High Court heard Ranveer’s plea. Senior Advocate Sajan Poovayy, representing the actor, argued that Ranveer’s remarks were taken out of context and that there was no intent to hurt any community.

The court, however, emphasized the responsibility that comes with public influence, stating:

"You could be Ranveer Singh or anyone. But one shouldn't have behaved with such insensitivity. Ranveer might be a superstar. It was not expected from him, who has the power to influence people."

The bench also noted the enduring impact of online content, adding, "People may forget, but the internet won’t forget." The court restrained the police from taking any coercive action against Ranveer until March 2 and directed him to cooperate with the ongoing investigation.

Details of the Controversy

The controversy dates back to November 28, 2025, at IFFI Goa. Ranveer, while appreciating Rishab’s performance, mimicked the actor twice on stage. Rishab requested him not to continue, both during the performance and later while greeting him.

Following the backlash, Ranveer issued a public apology, stating:

"My intention was to highlight Rishabh's incredible performance in the film. Actor to actor, I know how much it would take to perform that particular scene in the way that he did, for which he has my utmost admiration. I have always deeply respected every culture, tradition and belief in our country. If I've hurt anyone's sentiments, I sincerely apologise."

The incident underscores the scrutiny that public figures face and the careful balance required when humor intersects with cultural or religious sentiments.
