The Kansas City Chiefs will not enter negotiations to restructure Patrick Mahomes ’ contract.
Mahomes was handed the largest contract in sports history in 2020 when the Chiefs awarded him a 10-year deal worth $477m, which could potentially rise to $503m. At things stand, though, he is seventh on the list of highest paid NFL quarterbacks.
Recent months have seen other QBs such as Lamar Jackson with the Baltimore Ravens and Aaron Rodgers, with his move to the New York Jets, surpass Mahomes’ annual earnings. As a result, it led to speculation that the Chiefs could be forced to enter negotiations over a restructure of Mahomes’ deal.
However, according to a report in The Athletic, the Chiefs are not planning to restructure the contract of Mahomes before the start of the 2023 regular season. It’s also been stated that the situation is expected to remain the same through to the end of the 2024 off-season, as well.
Mahomes is widely regarded as one of the greatest players to represent the Chiefs in the franchise's history. The 27-year-old is entering his seventh year at Arrowhead Stadium and looking to win a third Super Bowl in his career.
His effort last season saw Mahomes win a second NFL MVP award, following on from his previous accolade in 2018. Mahomes was handed the number one QB ranking by ESPN for 2022 with a score of 77.6, with Buffalo Bills star Josh Allen in second place with a 71.4 rating.
The quarterback spoke to reporters this week after the latest organised team activities session for the Chiefs. It was here where Mahomes reaffirmed his intention to build a dynasty in Kansas
“I’ve always said I worry about legacy and winning rings more than making money,” said Mahomes. “I’ll never do anything that’s going to hurt us from keeping the great players around me.”
Mahomes added: “It’s more of a (thought) that you just want to do (a contract to where you don’t) hurt other quarterbacks whenever their contracts come up.
“You want to keep the bar pushing (higher). It’s not about making a ton of money. I’ve made enough money to where I’ll be set for the rest of my life.
“But at the same time, you’ve got to find that line where you’re making a good amount of money but you’re still keeping a lot of great players around you so you can win these Super Bowls.”
Mahomes is taking part in the latest set of OTA’s with the Chiefs as they prepare for a season trying to win another Super Bowl. The AFC West team beat the Philadelphia Eagles in last season’s showpiece, and will be favourites to do the same again when the NFL’s prime event goes to the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas next February.
