Kadarius Toney was traded from the New York Giants to the Kansas City Chiefs this past week, a deal that shocked some, including Toney himself.
The reality is, the Giants have been wanting to rid themselves of Toney since the team turned over the reins to new general manager Joe Schoen in January.
For a team that is desperate need of wide receiver depth and offensive weapons, the move was a curious one, leading insiders to believe the relationship was more toxic than both sides had been letting on.
Schoen and the Giants appear to be satisfied with the return they got (2023 third and sixth round draft picks) and are moving on. Toney still has to find his way in Kansas City, which could begin as early as this week.
“I’m working towards [playing],” Toney told reporters on Wednesday. “I’m very eager to go out there and be the player I am.”
So are we. Giant fans didn’t get much of chance to endear themselves to Toney. He played in just 12 games since being drafted 20th overall in 2021 and had exactly one notable performance. He spent most of his time battling a myriad of injuries and ailments, which drew questions regarding his future with the Giants.
Toney, who is suddenly healthy, is pleased with where he landed after a year and a half with a team who didn’t ‘want’ him.
“I would say it feels good [to be] pretty much wanted by a team, and I think the history probably goes back way a little further than that. Before I even came into the league, they really wanted me here,” Toney said of the Chiefs.
The trade is a clear indication that the Giants are changing their culture and riding themselves of players who don’t go along with the program.
“It was the best decision for the organization. Again, (head coach Brian Daboll) and I talk all the time. I know he mentions that to you guys. We talk about everything and at the end of the day, it was best for both parties,” Schoen said.
Time will tell. Toney was giving the Giants nothing. They got themselves some draft capital in return. Toney will have to start playing on a consistent basis to make the trade worth while for Kansas City.
Everyone is moving on.
