The people’s princess of country, Kacey Musgraves, surprised dinner goers last night by playing an intimate gig at Sydney’s newest CBD hotspot, Grill Americano.
The Golden Hour singer was the surprise guest at an American Express dinner for the fancy pants card holders (that’s Centurion and Platinum card members to us plebs), treating diners to a taste of what Australian fans are about to witness on her tour.
As well as performing “Slow Burn”, “Butterflies” and “Rainbows” from her Grammy Album of the Year award-winning album Golden Hour, Kacey performed her new track, “The Architect”.

“I was with some friends in Nashville and we were just analysing the state of the world, in particular America, where things feel rather crazy most days,” she told diners about her new tune.
“We were at a loss of where to go creatively, and I had this title in my back pocket that I’d been saving, and I wasn’t sure how to write it quite yet. We started talking about just some of the insane events that were happening in America, that happens all the time, and it led us down this path of wondering: how much control do we really have? And if there is a god, then why do such crazy things happen? Why is there so much suffering?
“Being a human alive in 2025, it’s such a strange duality of beauty and gratitude, but also suffering. It’s really hard to know what to do with that sometimes. All that led to this song being written. It just makes you want to be able to pick up the phone and ask somebody, ‘what the hell is going on?'”
Grill Americano — which opens to the public today — is the latest brainchild of restaurateur Chris Lucas and executive chef Vincenzo Ursini, following the successful opening of Grill Americano in Melbourne in 2022.

Housed in the historic Qantas House building (the blue glass one on the corner of Hunter and Phillip St, up the road from the old Frankie’s spot), Grill Americano is a love letter to New York style dining and Italian cuisine.
“There’s two places that I love, both from a culinary point of view and an architectural point of view,” Lucas said at the American Express dinner, hosted by Good Food. “I love New York, I lived in New York, I love that urbane Italian old school restaurant that New York is quite famous for, like Carbone and Spark Steakhouse. And I love the elegance and sophistication of Italian food, and one of my favourite cities is Venice. I actually got married in Venice. To put those two together, it was a thought bubble in my mind. I just wanted to do the two things I loved the most. To be honest, I had no idea it was going to work — you never do with restaurants — but people just took to it.”
On the menu, you’ll find hand-made pasta, a drool-inducing steak menu, and a 10,000-strong wine list. Oh, and trust us: order the tiramisu for dessert. Just bring a friend to help you finish the more-than-generous serving.
In the meantime, Kacey is set to present at the 2025 ARIA Awards in Sydney, so make sure you’re tuning in (or at least, keeping an eye on our live coverage).
Grill Americano opens November 19, and can be found at 1 Chifley Square, Sydney NSW 2000. For Kacey Musgraves tickets across Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, head to Frontier Touring. Find out more about Amex here.
