A K-pop’s band attempt to ingratiate themselves with the local audience in Texas resulted in a fashion faux pas, with the group wearing retro Glasgow Rangers football shirts.
STAYC had intended to wear the jerseys of the Texas Rangers baseball team, who this week reached the World Series, for a show in Dallas as part of their US tour.
But pictures circulating on social media showed two members of the girl group wearing blue Glasgow Rangers 1996-97 home shirts fashioned into crop tops.
The attire would have triggered nostalgic memories for Rangers supporters, whose team won their ninth consecutive league title that season, which equalled Celtic’s record from 1973–74.
The blue half of Glasgow, managed by Walter Smith, also won the Scottish League Cup after a 4-3 victory over Hearts at Celtic Park in a team featuring Paul Gascoigne, Brian Laudrup and Ally McCoist.
One Glasgow Rangers fan wrote on X, formerly Twitter: “Rangers are the kings of K-pop.”
Another wrote: “As a Scottish person who supports [Rangers] this was not in my 2023 bingo card.”
STAYC, comprising Sumin, Sieun, Isa, Seeun, Yoon and J, marked their musical debut in 2020 with the well-received album Star to a Young Culture.
The South Korean group’s latest album is called Teenfresh.
This is not the first time a K-pop band has chosen to don a Glasgow football shirt. In 2018 two members of the boy band Stray Kids appeared wearing retro Celtic shirts in the music video for their song My Pace.
STAYC will be appearing at Wembley to perform alongside other K-pop stars for Korea on Stage in London on 8 November.
