Justin Langer's future as coach still unclear after marathon Cricket Australia board meeting

Cricket Australia (CA) says it will hold "confidential discussions" with Justin Langer about his future as national men's coach following a marathon board meeting on Friday.

Speculation had grown CA would make an announcement about whether Langer would continue in the role following the meeting in Melbourne.

But CA chief executive Nock Hockley told reporters his organisation would hold further talks with Langer before a decision would be announced publicly.

"Cricket Australia can confirm that the CA board met today and part of that meeting involved significant discussions about men's head coach Justin Langer's contract," Hockley read from a statement.

"We will now enter into confidential discussions with Justin and the outcome will be announced as soon as possible.

"We have no further comment until then."

Langer recently coached the men's team to a 4-0 Ashes series victory and a T20 World Cup triumph.

Rumours of player dissatisfaction with Langer's coaching style have surrounded the squad for much of the past 12 months.

On Thursday, Australian Test captain Pat Cummins avoided the chance to endorse Langer, saying it is not his job to decide his future

"It's part of speculation which I don't think is really healthy. I just don't want to add to it," Cummins said when asked whether he wants Langer to continue.

"That's Cricket Australia's job. It's not my job.

"I've really loved my time working with JL and we've had an evaluation process. I've been part of that, a lot of other players and staff have been part of that.

"Just like when we get evaluated. I've got huge respect for JL, really like working with him. But it's not my call."

Langer has won 15 of 27 Tests as men's coach since taking charge in 2018 in the wake of the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa.

Australia's men's T20 World Cup win last November was its first in the tournament's history.

But the Australians also recorded a Test series loss to India in the 2020/21 summer under his coaching, as well as white-ball series losses in West Indies and Bangladesh last year.

Meanwhile, CA confirmed its men's tour of Pakistan in March and April has been endorsed by its board.

It will be the first time since 1998 the national men's squad will tour Pakistan.

Australia will play three Tests against Pakistan, and as many one-day internationals.

The two teams will also contest a single T20 international.
