Just Stop Oil block traffic in Westminster for third time this week

Just Stop Oil protesters are slowly marching through Westminster and Lambeth in the third such protest this week.

Protesters began the march at Parliament Square around 7.40am on Wednesday, Metropolitan Police said, before moving to Whitehall, Storey’s Gate and Victoria Street.

The group said around 90 people began marching from five different locations around Westminster and Lambeth, including Waterloo Bridge, Trafalgar Square and Pall Mall.

“Today’s marches are being held in solidarity with nine Ugandan students who are facing their first day of a trial today in Kampala, Uganda,” Just Stop Oil said in a statement.

“The students are facing trumped-up charges of common nuisance, for peacefully resisting the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP).”

Protesters plan to visit the Ugandian Embassy in Trafalgar Square “to highlight the injustice faced by these students and to express solidarity with all those taking action around the world, on the front line of the climate crisis”.

Officers are on the scene “engaging and managing traffic”, the Met said.

“Our role is to maintain the safety of road users and get traffic moving as soon as possible,” it added.

Demonstrators blocked traffic on the northbound carriageway at Whitehall, causing delays.

Supporters holding banners could be seen walking next to gridlock traffic in the southbound lane.

The route follows similar marches carried out on Monday and Tuesday by hundreds of Just Stop Oil activists.

The eco-group has called for a march every day from 7am and every weekend from midday in its campaign of action to stop new oil and gas licences in the UK.
