Just 9% of young people say monarchy makes Britain great as NHS tops survey

With the Platinum Jubilee this week, millions are gearing up for a celebration of all things British up and down the country.

But while people are looking forward to historic festivities to mark the Queen's 70 years on the throne, a new survey has shown that a minority of Brits would actually class the monarchy as the best thing about the country.

YouGov found that the NHS and the British countryside are much more popular than the royals who had only 9% support among young people.

A hit across the generations, some 62% of respondents said the NHS is among the best things about Britain, while 61% voted for the rolling hills of the great British outdoors.

Some 37% say that Britain's history and shared national pride are among the best things about the country today.

And despite the Platinum Jubilee rousing Union Jacks across the country, just 34% say the monarchy and the Royal Family are among the greatest things about the UK.

Respondents were deeply divided across generations, with half of those aged 65 and over (51%) saying it is among the best things about Britain, but only 9% of those aged 18 to 24 saying the same.

Other popular points of appreciation included the UK’s culture of free speech and its multicultural and diverse society.

In addition, 22% of the public say that Britain's island location is among its best features.

The proportion of Britons seeing the Royal Family as being among Britain's best assets has dropped 8% since the Diamond Jubilee ten years ago - from 42% to 34%.

The drop is largely due to a shift in opinion among the younger demographic - in 2012, 40% of those aged 18 to 24 said the monarchy was one of the best things about the country. Since then, it has since dropped a massive 31%.

National pride has also dropped substantially in its standing as an admired quality of modern Britain - in 2012, 51% of the public listed it among the best things about the nation. Now, the percentage stands at just 37%.
