Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has urged Steven Gerrard to take a break from the game following an early-morning exchange in the wake of his Aston Villa sacking.
The former Rangers boss saw his spell as Villa Park boss come to an abrupt end when the club announced he would be leaving 11 months in charge less than an hour after his 10-man side went down 3-0 to newly promoted Fulham. With the club languishing in 17th in the Premier League table and facing a relegation scrap Villa chief Christian Purslow said the decision was based on an "evaluation of results and performances over the calendar year", with Gerrard managing just 13 wins.
However, Klopp reckons Gerrard is still destined for success having impressed during his time within the Liverpool academy structure and in the Scottish Premiership, where he took the league title back to Ibrox to end Celtic's dominant stretch. The German reckons that the Anfield legend must be patient over his next move and choose the right club.
Klopp said: ‘I’m very sure he will be back. I’ve always followed him so we had a little exchange this morning, nothing too deep. I can imagine it’s disappointing for him because of the ambitious he had.
"But I don’t think we need to worry about Stevie, he knows the game and these things can happen. In life we all get knocks, it’s about how we respond.
"He’s always come back before and he will come back from this. A lot of great mangers out there have had to leave clubs for whichever reason and show up somewhere else, learn from it and find a better situation.
"He will be back but I hope he takes some time as well. He’s been working pretty much all the time since playing so maybe he can take some time to recharge."
