Jurgen Klopp quickly identifies Liverpool's next two transfers after Alexis Mac Allister

Liverpool are aiming to bring in another two midfielders this summer even after they sign Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton.

The Reds are closing in on a deal for the Argentine playmaker and it only seems a matter of time before he arrives on Merseyside. He will become the club’s first signing of what is expected to be an extremely busy summer for new sporting director Jorg Schmadtke.

Liverpool are not resting on their laurels though, with the next stage of their rebuild already in the planning. With the likes of James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and Arthur Melo all leaving this summer, the Reds needed desperate investment in midfield.

Mac Allister will certainly add to the club’s options but there could be more. According to Mail Online, Jurgen Klopp wants at least two more midfielders - one being more of a defensive influence.

Talks have reportedly commenced with the representatives of Borussia Monchengladbach star Manu Kone. A deal could potentially be slightly easier to facilitate with Schmadtke’s son Nils recently securing a recruitment consultancy role with the German side.

There are a few more options being considered though. Nice midfielder Khephren Thuram has been scouted, whilst recently-relegated Southampton star Romeo Lavia has been discussed by the Reds’ hierarchy. Elsewhere, there could also be a few options in Spain.

Sport have suggested that Liverpool are eyeing up a swoop for Barcelona ’s Franck Kessie just a year after he arrived at the Camp Nou. Finally, further reports from Spain suggest that the Reds are at the front of the queue for Celta Vigo wonderkid Gabri Veiga.

At this stage, it appears unlikely that Liverpool will sign all five this summer but they could potentially revisit their interest next summer. Current midfielder Thiago Alcantara could leave on a free transfer in 12 months with the Reds hesitating on a new contract but at this stage a sale has been ruled out.

The Spaniard joined the Merseysiders from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2020 but a succession of injuries has limited him to just 97 appearances in all competitions for the club. He will be 33 by next summer, with the Reds not keen on tying players down to long-term deals beyond their peak years.

Liverpool could also lose another one of their midfielders this summer. Fabio Carvalho has been subject to interest from abroad after a stop-start debut campaign at Anfield.

German side RB Leipzig have been strongly linked with a move for his services but Liverpool would prefer a loan as opposed to an outright sale. The Portuguese youth international made 21 appearances for Liverpool last term, scoring three times.
