Julián Álvarez has completed a high-profile transfer from Manchester City to Atlético Madrid in a deal reportedly worth around $104 million, as confirmed by the Spanish club on Monday.

The Argentine forward has penned a six-year contract with Atlético Madrid. Reports suggest that the initial fee for Álvarez is $82 million (£64 million), with potential add-ons amounting to $22 million (£17 million).

City and Atlético have been contacted by news agencies to verify the reported transfer fee.

Álvarez expressed his excitement for the new challenge by posting on Instagram, stating, “New challenges, with the same people as always.”

Álvarez joined Manchester City in 2022 after impressing with River Plate in Argentina. During his two seasons with City, the 24-year-old featured in 103 matches across all competitions, scoring 36 goals and providing 18 assists.

He played a pivotal role in City's success, contributing to the team's six major trophies, including the historic treble-winning season in 2022/23.

Álvarez bid farewell to City with gratitude, acknowledging his growth as a player and person during his time at the club.

As an Argentina international, Álvarez has represented his country in various competitions, including the 2022 World Cup and two Copa América triumphs. He has earned 36 caps for Argentina, scoring nine goals, and also participated in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

Álvarez will now don the No. 19 shirt at Atlético Madrid under the management of Diego Simeone. The club has also secured the services of Norwegian forward Alexander Sørloth from Villarreal to strengthen its attacking options.

Following a somewhat disappointing season, where Atlético finished fourth in La Liga and exited the Champions League in the quarterfinals, Álvarez and Sørloth are expected to provide the necessary firepower for a successful 2024/25 campaign.

Atlético Madrid kicks off its La Liga season on August 19 with an away fixture against Villarreal.
