A federal judge has ordered the release of a man who was inside a vehicle when Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was shot by ICE officers in Houston on 7 July. The fatal incident caused an uproar among locals and immigrants, bringing renewed attention to ICE operations in the country.

For context, the ruling follows a dispute over how the shooting unfolded. After the incident, the Department of Homeland Security claimed that Araujo allegedly attempted to evade arrest in his vehicle and tried to ram an officer, per the Associated Press, leading an agent to shoot him in self-defence. The federal law enforcement agency said the victim lived in the United States illegally.
