Judge Merchan Prohibits Lawyers From Commenting During Witness Testimony

Judge Juan M. Merchan poses in his chambers in New York, Thursday, March 14, 2024. Citing Trump's threatening and inflammatory statements, Merchan imposed a gag order last month that bars Trump

Judge Juan Merchan made it clear during a recent trial that lawyers are not permitted to comment while a witness is testifying. He emphasized to the jurors that such behavior is common in movies and television shows but is not acceptable in a real courtroom setting.

Merchan firmly stated, 'That is not allowed. That happens on TV and in the movies, that does not happen in real trials.'

Both the prosecutor, Joshua Steinglass, and former President Trump's attorney, Todd Blanche, reacted with smiles to the judge's remarks.

It is a common misconception perpetuated by media portrayals that lawyers can interject or comment during witness testimony. However, in actual legal proceedings, this practice is strictly prohibited to maintain the integrity and fairness of the trial process.

Judge Merchan's reminder serves as a reinforcement of the rules and decorum expected in a courtroom, ensuring that the focus remains on the evidence presented and the testimonies given without any external influence or disruption.

By upholding these standards, the legal system can uphold justice and provide a fair trial for all parties involved. It is essential for both legal professionals and jurors to adhere to these guidelines to uphold the principles of a just and impartial judicial process.
