When it comes to ageless boozers, King’s Cross is a haven. There’s the Dolphin, a beautiful corner site with hanging baskets and warming Peruvian food, while Miller’s is a real drinkers’ pub on the Caledonian Road known for its lively karaoke. And then there’s McGlynn’s, which the artist Peter Doig bought last year for just over £3 million. It’s been shut since 2023 after long-time landlord Gerry Dolan died. Many have missed the wooden booths, the carpet and the resident cat, perhaps only two of which will return. As for the £5 pints, we can only pray.
The Boot is a commendable, lovable fourth, tucked away on a back street behind the Standard hotel. I first ended up drinking here after turning up to the Eurostar with a friend only to find out our tickets weren’t for some date in February, but for a whole month later. Knowing the general manager at our gaff wouldn’t let us have the extra time off, it was £72 wasted. Needless to say, we drowned our sorrows in the Boot, back when you could get a bit pissed for £15.
