Jose Mourinho has already been in contact with Granit Xhaka this season as Roma revive their interest in the Arsenal midfielder.
The Swiss international seemed destined to link up with the former Chelsea boss last summer, but a move fell through.
Xhaka would go on to sign a contract extension putting any speculation surrounding his future to bed.
But it appears Roma are set to go back in for the midfielder once again in the upcoming transfer window.
football.london claims that the Italians will make a move for Xhaka at the end of the season and that the player would entertain a switch to the Stadio Olympico if a deal comes to fruition.
Mourinho hopes Xhaka's experience and leadership will improve his squad's mentality after he criticised their attitude after a recent defeat to Juventus.
Is it time for Granit Xhaka to leave Arsenal this summer? Comment below
He said: "When we allowed them back in for 3-2, a team with a strong mentality like Juventus, a strong character. The fear set in. A psychological complex. It's not a problem for me having 3-2, it's a problem for them. For my team.
"At the end of the day, when you're in the [expletive] you get back on your feet and find your character. But there are people in this locker room who are a bit too nice, a bit too weak."
And it seems the pair are no strangers to each other as they interacted with each other on social media back in September.
Xhaka expressed his excitement at getting the all-clear to join up with the Switzerland national team after he tested positive ahead of their clash with Greece.
Mourinho would reply to Xhaka's post urging the Arsenal player to get vaccinated and "be safe" after he turned down the Covid-19 jab.
"Get the jab Granit and be safe," the 59-year-old wrote from his official account in the comments.
Xhaka responded: "Thank you, mister."
It was rumoured that Xhaka's vaccination stance would deter Mourinho from making a move for the Arsenal midfielder, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
Xhaka isn't the only player who looks set to depart the Emirates as Arteta continues to trim his squad in what looks to be another summer exodus.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who is also at Roma on a season-long deal, is unlikely to return to the Emirates when his spell ends, while Hector Bellerin is also surplus to requirements due to the rapid rise of Takehiro Tomiyasu.
Cedric Soares has also not ruled out an exit as his representatives are reportedly looking to find him a new club.
Arteta will be looking to bring in reinforcements in the other direction, something they weren't able to do in January.
But the Spaniard isn't worried about their lack of activity in the transfer market last month as he defended the club's recruitment policy and sporting director Edu.
Speaking ahead of their Premier League clash against Wolves, he said: "Edu and his team did a fantastic job and they continue to do that.
"We only want the best players and the best people in this club. When we are in a rush and the reasons are not right for getting a player into the club, we decide not to do it."
