Jose Mourinho eyes Man Utd transfer raid as star 'accepts' it is time to leave club

Jose Mourinho is sizing up a move for Manchester United outcast Donny van de Beek, who is ready to leave Old Trafford.

Van de Beek joined the Red Devils in 2020, but has failed to impress a succession of managers. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Ralf Rangnick and Erik ten Hag have all left the midfielder out of their plans.

He has struggled for game-time as a result, making just 10 appearances in all competitions in the season just gone. The Dutchman was sidelined with a knee injury in January, one which kept him in the treatment room for the rest of the campaign.

While he has another two years to run on his contract, it appears as if that injury means he has already played his final game for United. Van de Beek is considering his options, with United ready to sell him.

According to Sky Sport Italia, Van de Beek's situation has attracted the eye of Roma. The Serie A giants are currently managed by Mourinho, who is eyeing a raid of the club he was previously in charge of.

Van de Beek is no longer part of the Red Devils' plans moving forward and will be departing Old Trafford. Roma have been approached about a potential deal, though the Italian side do not consider him to be a priority.

They could be tempted into signing him on loan if Van de Beek does not find a new permanent home in the coming weeks. So far, Roma have been focused on outgoings, with Benjamin Tahirović and Justin Kluivert both leaving the Stadio Olimpico.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Van de Beek had accepted that it was time to move on from United. After failing to earn the trust of Ten Hag, he was a peripheral figure, a situation which has convinced him to go.

The Dutchman expects to be fit for pre-season and is now ready to seek out more regular game time. He previously left United for Everton on loan, though that move did not go as planned.

And with United now looking to boost their midfield options, it appears time is up for Van de Beek. That will come as no surprise to former United star Paul Parker, who urged him to leave Old Trafford back in March.

“Even though it’s his old manager that sold him to Man United, I think Ten Hag knows it’s not going to work out for him. I think he was used the wrong way under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer," Parker had said.

"He arrived at a bad time due to Covid. He might need to go back to Holland and revitalise his career. I don’t see him fitting into a Man United midfield now.”
