Jose Mourinho could help Mauricio Pochettino fix major Chelsea problem this summer

Chelsea could be handed a massive boost to their summer transfer plans by former manager Jose Mourinho, who is reportedly eager to reunite with Blues striker Romelu Lukaku.

The Belgian, who is gearing up to face Manchester City in the Champions League Final with Inter Milan next weekend, has spent time away from Stamford Bridge this campaign after a disappointing return to his first Premier League club in 2021.

His future with the Nerazzurri is so far unknown come the impending end of his loan, and despite his parent club being desperate to fill the role of consistent goalscorer, the striker does not wish to return to London.

This could result in a drawn out saga over the course of the summer window, however according to London World, former Chelsea boss Mourinho could be prepared to offer his former team a lifeline in this scenario.

The Portuguese manager has been under the spotlight for plenty of other reasons following his reaction to AS Roma's penalty shoot-out defeat to Sevilla in Wednesday's Europa League Final, and whilst his future in Italy is too uncertain, he is happy there and wishes to add Lukaku's firepower to the Giallorossi.

The pair worked together twice in England, first at Chelsea and then Manchester United. He would be the latest in a string of Premier League players to follow Mourinho to the Italian capital, including former Blues Nemanja Matic and Tammy Abraham.

Should Roma grant their manager his latest wish and providing the deal gets over the line in good time, it would be advantageous for Chelsea on two counts.

Firstly, it would eliminate yet another player from the already sizeable squad at Cobham. Mauricio Pochettino will be hoping for the smoothest transition possible into his new role, and getting rid of want-away players is the first step to achieving this.

Second to that, whatever the club manage to recoup from the £97.5 million that was spent on Lukaku two summers ago can be pumped back into the pot in the hunt for a replacement No.9.

A plethora of names across the continent have been linked with making the switch to Chelsea, and the Blues would be one step closer to finding their next talisman if they can successfully facilitate Lukaku's exit in the near future.
