Jordan Henderson makes 'lucky' admission after Liverpool win over Villarreal

Jordan Henderson has admitted where Liverpool got “lucky” in their win over Villarreal.

The Reds claimed a 2-0 victory over the La Liga outfit in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final at Anfield on Wednesday night. A Pervis Estupinan own goal followed by a Sadio Mane strike in the second half settled the tie.

Jurgen Klopp’s side will now travel to Newcastle United in the Premier League this Saturday before taking on Villarreal in the return leg at the Estadio de la Ceramica next Tuesday. The winner will go on to face Real Madrid or Manchester City in the final.

Liverpool’s first goal came when Henderson saw his cross deflect off Estupinan and fly into the net. And speaking after the match, the Reds captain admitted they got fortunate.

“It was a bit lucky,” Henderson told BT Sport. “It was good play but it is lucky because it comes off the keeper and on to the post.

“But you need a little bit of luck when the team is playing with a low block, I thought that lifted the crowd and thankfully we got another one.”

Then speaking about Villarreal, who clearly came to frustrate, Henderson said: "They are a very organised team, we knew they were going to make it difficult.

“But it was important for us to remain focused, stay positive and keep moving the ball quickly and eventually we would break them down and we did with two good goals.”
