Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor is in the middle of discussions about a potential contract extension, and the electric back is hoping to finish his career with the team that drafted him.
Though Taylor understands the business side of the negotiations, which have become a harsh reality for running backs in recent offseasons, he hasn’t wavered in his desire to finish his career with the Colts.
“You look at the past, and guys who have shown their value on and off the field tend to stay here,” Taylor told reporters at minicamp, via IndyStar. “My goal, the first season after I got drafted, I’m like ‘I want to retire a Colt.’ Hopefully the organization sees that the same, because I do.”
It certainly will be an interesting development. Taylor isn’t the only top-tier running back searching for a new contract. The 2022 rushing leader, Josh Jacobs, and the ever-electric Saquon Barkley are hoping to get new contracts after being hit with the franchise tag this offseason.
Taylor still has one year left on his rookie deal, but the Colts tend to give extensions during the summer before training camp if possible. However, the team may be waiting to see what the potential extensions for Jacobs and Barkley look like.
The Colts have a bit of leniency on the contract considering the flexibility of having a quarterback on a rookie contract. Still, the team must be cautious given the history of running back production on a second contract.
We’ll see if the two sides can make any progress this offseason, but Taylor has made it clear he wants to wear the horseshoe.
