Jonathan Gannon excited to incorporate new RB Marlon Mack

The Arizona Cardinals added veteran running back Marlon Mack to the roster on Friday. He could viably be James Conner’s backup when the season begins.

Head coach Jonathan Gannon is glad to have him on the roster, calling him “a really good player we decided to add.”

“Excited to have him here,” Gannon said on Saturday. “I was with him in Indy. Phenomenal person and phenomenal teammate. Excited to get him acclimated,”

Mack was drafted by the Colts in 2017 and played for them into 2021. He had over 900 rushing yards in 2018 and over 1,000 in 2019.

Gannon was on the coaching staff there 2018-2020.

There is some question as to how much he has left. Since his 1,000 yard season, he has played in only 15 games and rushed for 211 yards.

He tore his Achilles in 2020.

“We’ll find out (how much he has left),” Gannon said. “He’s had some really good years. He’s been nicked like a lot of running backs have. If you ask him, he’s got a lot left in the tank.”

Gannon said the addition was not about the performance of other running backs like Keaontay Ingram.

“Add a good player” was the goal, said Gannon.

The Cardinals have been down a running back recently. Ingram has missed practices with an undisclosed injury. Gannon said he should be back soon.

In Mack’s first practice with the Cardinals, he was getting work with the third-team offense.
