A Jesmond bar was packed out on Wednesday night after a rumour circulated online that Johnny Depp was there.
And while the speculation proved to be way off the mark, the team at Jam Jar on Osborne Road certainly aren’t complaining after takings went through the roof.
Around 7.30pm on June 1, while the ears of the world were on a court in Fairfax, Virginia for the outcome of the Depp v Heard defamation case, Newcastle was thrown into a frenzy when movie icon Johnny was spotted at The Bridge Tavern down the Quayside, minutes before the verdict was due.
And he wasn’t alone either. As well as being in the company of legend Jeff Beck, who he will join on stage at Sage Gateshead on Thursday night, he was also with Tyneside’s own music megastar, Sam Fender.

Word that the pair were hanging out at the popular pub spread like wildfire, just as news broke from the States that the jury had ruled in Johnny’s favour, with him being awarded $10 in damages.
With Johnny leaving The Bridge before the verdict was announced, speculation was rife on where he was headed and on Twitter the buzz was that he’d gone to Jesmond and ended up in Jam Jar. Locals expressed their surprise and clearly curiosity got the better of many, as the place famous for its epic brunches, was soon packed to the rafters.
However, late on Wednesday night, whilst celebrating a massively busy night, someone from Jam Jar told ChronicleLive Johnny didn’t make an appearance.
They told us: “Unfortunately not. A rather excitable local spread a rumour that saw us get absolutely rammed because of it.”
The staff member added that the buzz that Johnny Depp might be there saw them take at least an extra £2,000 on the till.
