John Souttar to Rangers not imminent and Robbie Neilson confident Hearts can keep key man

Robbie Neilson is convinced John Souttar will still be a Hearts player when the transfer window closes.

The Gorgie gaffer was responding after the defender’s omission from the squad for the Scottish Cup tie against Auchinleck Talbot sparked speculation that he could be set to make an immediate move to Rangers.

Souttar has penned a pre-contract with the Scottish Premiership champions and would have been ineligible to feature in the tournament for Rangers, if he makes the switch this month.

The BBC reported that talks had kicked off between the clubs, with Hearts reportedly demanding £500,000 and the Ibrox side willing to pay £300,000.

But Hearts boss Neilson insists the player didn’t make the trip to Ayrshire due to an injury he picked up in the midweek win over St Johnstone.

Speaking ahead of the fourth round tie at Beechwood Park, Neilson said: “John had a knock after the game and it was on the same ankle that he had the double ruptured Achilles.

“We just felt there was no point in bringing him down here to sit on the bench so at this point in time he’s still a Hearts player and I don’t see that changing to be honest.

“I don’t think it will change unless a substantial offer comes in which it hasn’t.”
