Joe Root's position as England captain under the spotlight after West Indies loss

Joe Root ’s future as England captain has come into question following his side’s defeat to West Indies.

English cricket has hit a new 145-year low with the defeat after going five multi-Test series without victory for the first time in their history.

Whilst this series against West Indies was supposed to hail a ‘red-ball reset’ after the winter’s disastrous Ashes tour, England were unable to build upon the green shoots of progress they showed on flat pitches in the first two matches and reverted back to old ways in the final Test, suffering a 10-wicket defeat.

It has raised plenty of questions over Root’s future as captain after director of cricket Ashley Giles and coach Chris Silverwood both lost their jobs after the Ashes.

We want your thoughts on Root’s future as captain and, if he is replaced, who should be the new skipper, with one common argument for the Yorkshireman continuing as captain being a lack of alternatives.

Ben Stokes has been named as an option but there are fears of overloading the responsibilities on the shoulders of England’s talismanic all-rounder. Another alternative option is Jonny Bairstow after he re-cemented his place back in England’s Test team with a good run of form.

Or should England’s next captain come from outside of the current set-up? Limited overs skipper Eoin Morgan and Somerset captain Tom Abell have both been touted as potential replacements for Root.

Have your say in the poll above, where you can also say whether you think James Anderson and Stuart Broad should be recalled after the two legendary bowlers were controversially dropped from the squad to face West Indies despite strong performances in the Ashes.

You can debate your choices in the comments below.
