Joe Marler heads into crowd after being sent from field by referee

England international Joe Marler has caught the attention of social media with a comical interaction with rival fans following his yellow card in the dying moments of Leicester Tigers v Harlequins.

The two teams faced off in the final round of Premiership games at the weekend. Marler's Quins would go on to pip the Tigers 17-20 at Welford Road.

With Tigers already qualified for the Premiership semi-finals, the fans were able to enjoy a laugh at the expense of Marler after the popular rugby character was given his marching orders for an infringement at the ruck after 83 minutes.

Referee Ian Tempest brandished the yellow whilst Marler was laid out on the floor, and the crowd responded with a chorus of cheers.

The the front-row got up with a wry smile on his face, putting his thumb up to the crowd as the cheering intensified. Marler made his way straight to the crowd and high-fived a Leicester fan.

The 32-year-old then leaned up against the advertising hoarding and winked at another fan as he chatted and pointed to towards the official and players to cap off a unique end to the game.

Commentator Martin Gillingham summed up the moment: "And it's a yellow card, and it's Joe Marler who receives it while on the floor. Well he is the pantomime villain, he goes out with a smile and a high five."

You can watch the clip below.

Marler has 83 England caps since his debut in 2012, but has since fallen out of favour on the international stage.

Fellow England man Chris Ashton signed off his rugby career on a sour note in the same match after seeing red for a high tackle on Cadan Murley just before half time.

Despite the win for Quins, they finished in sixth place, leaving them out of the top four. Tigers however finished third, and will go on to play in the semi-finals against Sale Sharks this weekend.
