The Jets knew they needed to go out and get a veteran quarterback to take advantage of a roster that can win now. However, they continue to say all the right things about the quarterback Rodgers is replacing this year.
The Jets continue to say they plan on doing whatever they can — head coach Robert Saleh used the phrase “hell or high water” in the past — to develop 2021 No. 2 overall pick Zach Wilson. Jets general manager Joe Douglas echoed those sentiments again Monday, saying the Rodgers trade will be a “great thing” for Wilson.
Douglas believes having Rodgers around will allow Wilson an opportunity to “shadow a Hall of Fame quarterback” which will be huge for his development. Douglas also believes the “ceiling is unlimited” for Wilson, who will be entering his third NFL season. Next offseason is when the Jets have to make a decision on Wilson’s fifth-year option.
