Cincinnati Bengals star Joe Burrow has declared that Patrick Mahomes is the best quarterback in the NFL.
After Tom Brady ’s exit from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and retirement earlier this year, the title of the league’s best QB is gradually becoming a topic of discussion. Burrow is staking a claim to be part of the debate, but he is not the only one.
Mahomes helped guide the Kansas City Chiefs to winning the Super Bowl last season, beating the Philadelphia Eagles in Arizona. That was the second time that Mahomes has won the Super Bowl in his career, and will be looking to do the same against this forthcoming season.
Burrow was speaking to reporters in a press conference after a Bengals organised team activity (OTA) on Tuesday. It was here where the 26-year-old was asked who he thought was the best quarterback in the league.
"I don't think there's any argument right now," Burrow said. "It's Pat (Mahomes). Until somebody has a better year than he's had, he's the one to knock off."
He added: “Whenever you’re at the top of what you do, you always have respect for those guys. Because you know the work that it takes to get to that point.
“To where I’m at, to where guys in the locker room are at, to where people all over the world are at their specific job in all sports.”
Burrow was the number one overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft and is already in the conversation to be among the best in the league. In 2021, he helped guide the franchise to the AFC Championship title and narrowly missed out on the Super Bowl to the Los Angeles Rams.
NFL fans would get to see Burrow vs Mahomes as the Bengals faced the Chiefs in last season’s AFC Championship game. However, Burrow would not get the win this time, as Mahomes and the Chiefs claimed victory before securing another Super Bowl ring.
Burrow’s comments come at the same time as Mahomes being asked about the toughest players that he has faced in his career. After being drafted in 2017 by the Chiefs, the quarterback went on to list Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald, Miami Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsay and Buffalo Bills linebacker Von Miller in his list.
“In my career, Aaron Donald, one,” Mahomes told Complex Sports. “That’s out the gate. Jalen Ramsey, especially these last few years has always been a dog.
“And Von Miller. I’m glad he’s not in my division anymore.”
