Joe Biden has released a rousing and emotional re-election announcement video - and his Republican rivals have responded with a bizarre Artificial Intelligence spoof.
The 80-year-old formally announced his intention to run again in 2024 during a three-minute launch video as he promised to "finish the job" - but it was soon captured by the Republican National Committee.
Using AI, the video shows President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris celebrating at an election day party along with a series of fake reports.
It also features fake reports suggesting domestic and international problems were Mr Biden to be re-elected.
According to a Republican National Committee spokesperson, it is the first time a video has been created using just AI.
The 2024 election is said to be the first election which will have political adverts generated by Artificial Intelligence software.
Systems such as Midjourney and OpenAI are making it easier to create digital pictures and videos which are hard to decipher from reality.
Elon Musk had urged for a six-month pause in the training of advanced artificial intelligence models arguing it could pose “profound risks to society and humanity.”
The billionaire joined more than 1,000 experts in signing an open letter organised by the non-profit Future of Life Institute, the billionaire’s charity grant-making organisation.
Rona McDaniel, a RNC chairwoman, said in a statement accompanying the video: “Biden is so out-of-touch that after creating crisis after crisis, he thinks he deserves another four."
Republicans claimed the video was produced to hit back at Mr Biden after he painted the Republican Party as extremists trying to roll back access to abortion, cut Social Security, limit voting rights and ban books they disagree with.
“Around the country, MAGA extremists are lining up to take those bedrock freedoms away. This is not a time to be complacent. That’s why I’m running for re-election. Let’s finish this job. I know we can", Mr Biden said in his campaign video.
The videos come after a recent NBC poll showed 70 per cent of voters do not want Mr Biden to stand again - with more than half of Democrats also sharing the same opinion.
Voters have alluded to the president's age as the main reason for not wanting him to stand again - with 48 per cent believing it is a "major concern."
When the president was asked if he shared the concerns from voters over his age, he said: “It’s legitimate for people to raise issues about my age. And the only thing I can say is, watch me.”
However, Mr Biden had a medical earlier this year which showed he was healthy and able and able to perform his duties as president.
Democrats believe if Americans are faced with a choice of Joe Biden and Donald Trump again the president will win.
Mary Anne Marsh, a Democratic strategist, said: “Joe Biden has already beaten Donald Trump, and the last thing that the majority of Americans want to do in this country, again, is to have Donald Trump in the White House.
"Joe Biden will make mistakes, but in a matchup against Donald Trump, Biden wins.”
Kevin Madden, a former adviser to Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential bid, told the Financial Times the announcement is not being met with "enthusiasm."
He said: "Biden’s biggest challenge is that his announcement is not really being greeted with enthusiasm. Instead it’s being met with this overwhelming sense of reluctance.”
