Joao Gomes throws transfer into doubt despite admitting he 'dreams' of Liverpool move

Reported Liverpool transfer target Joao Gomes has committed his future to Flamengo, signing a new contract to keep him at the Brazilian club until 2027.

Jurgen Klopp's side had been linked with a January move for the 21-year-old, who has caught the eye in his home country this season having helped Flamengo to the final of the Copa Libertadores. Gomes made his professional debut in November 2020 after progressing through the club's academy system and has since been handed a number of starts within the first-team.

But hopes of a potential move to Merseyside are now, surely, in doubt after the youngster agreed a new contract extension to extend his stay at Flamengo until 2027. His previous deal was due to expire in December 2025.

Liverpool are not the only team said to have been monitoring Gomes, with Manchester United and other to European clubs also expected to be in the frame. Flamengo will, of course, not wish to part ways with the Rio de Janeiro-born star and now find themselves in a stronger position should they wish to negotiate a transfer fee with interested parties.

A question was recent put to Gomes on Instagram regarding the possibility of joining Liverpool, to which he responded: "Liverpool are a team I’d play for. I have the greatest desire to play. Playing in the Champions League is my biggest dream and that of my family, my biggest dream in football."
