The Jets could be on the verge of a brewing controversy along their offensive line after tackle Mekhi Becton and coach Robert Saleh publicly addressed the former first-round pick’s role heading into next season.
Early Saturday morning, Becton, the 11th overall pick in 2020, stirred the pot on Twitter with a since-deleted tweet that simply read, “I. AM. A. LEFT. TACKLE!!!” The timing of the 24-year-old’s strong message caught the attention of the Jets faithful, given that New York declined the oft-injured Becton’s fifth-year option on Tuesday amid chatter that he could play right tackle in 2023 instead of his natural role as a left tackle.
During a press conference later in the day, Saleh was asked to address Becton’s tweet, prompting him to retort with a blunt request to the disgruntled O-lineman.
“Go earn the left tackle,” Saleh told reporters with a smile.

Becton’s clear frustration with his role in 2023 figures to add another layer to his upcoming contract year, which will also mark his return to action after he re-injured his right knee in August and missed all of the ’22 season. Prior to his latest injury, Becton was expected to play right tackle despite showing promise at left in 14 games as a rookie, and in his lone appearance in 2021 before a right knee injury sidelined him for the final 16 games.
ESPN’s Rich Cimini recently reported Becton prefers to go back to left tackle, partially because right tackle “puts additional stress” on his twice-repaired right knee. However, Becton may not have a say in the matter as he appears headed for a competition for a starting spot against left tackle Duane Brown, who’s entering his 16th season, and veteran right tackles Max Mitchell and free-agent signing Billy Turner.
