Last week, Anthony Volpe was a prospect trying to make the Yankees roster as someone who grew up a fan of the team in New Jersey. On Wednesday, he’s the starting shortstop for Opening Day and is being congratulated by one of the best players to ever don the pinstripes.
“Congratulations Anthony Volpe,” Derek Jeter wrote on Twitter. “There’s nothing like playing shortstop for the New York Yankees.”
Jeter, of course, had a legendary career as a shortstop in New York that included 14 All-Star selections and five World Series championships. Volpe, a first-round draft pick in 2019, went viral on Sunday when the Yankees posted the video of him being told he made the team.

In the video, manager Aaron Boone can be seen telling Volpe to come into his office with a stern look as if he’s going to give him some bad news. But when he told the 21-year-old he’ll be a Yankee, Volpe’s reaction resembled that of a child who was just told that his dream came true.

With Jeter now showing support, Volpe has all the motivation in the world for when he makes his big league debut Thursday against the Giants at Yankee Stadium at 1:05 p.m. ET.
