Jet2, Ryanair, easyJet, British Airways face mask rules for holidaymakers as restrictions ease

Covid rules surrounding international travel have relaxed a lot since strict regulations were put in place two years ago.

But now all covid entry requirements have been lifted for the UK and many countries in Europe have eased testing requirements for those who are fully vaccinated - although each state can enforce their own rules.

Last week Scotland's face masks rules were scrapped meaning that it is no longer mandatory to wear a face covering in shops, pubs or on public transport.

However they still remain mandatory in professional health care settings and some businesses are continuing to encourage customers to wear a face mask - although it is optional.

Edinburgh Airport's policy states on their website: "Although it's no longer a legal requirement in Scotland we're still encouraging passengers and staff to ensure they're wearing masks unless exempt. Airlines may have their own guidelines and requirements so please check if they do and ensure you adhere to them."

For flights however, keen jet setters are advised to check with the airline regarding their face mask policy.

Here are the face mask policy for Jet2, Ryanair, easyJet, British Airways.

Jet2

While it's not mandatory, Jet2 are advising customers to continue wearing one when on board.

Jet2 say: "Your safety is our priority, so we’ve created our Face Mask Policy so everyone knows exactly what’s expected while travelling with us."

They add: "It’s no longer a legal requirement to wear a face mask at our airports or onboard our planes. However, as per UK Government guidance, we recommend that you continue to wear a face mask in these spaces, and you might need to wear one when you get to your overseas destination."

Ryanair

Ryanair still say that it is mandatory to wear a face mask when travelling on their jets.

According to Ryanair's website: "It is mandatory to wear a face mask/covering in the airport and on board your flight."

They also add: "Travel restrictions apply and it is the responsibility of each passenger to check local requirements here before travelling. You MUST also complete the necessary forms here or you may be denied boarding."

EasyJet

EasyJet stress that each country implement their own face mask rules and guidelines with some countries in Europe requiring specific face coverings. If flying to and from Italy, Austria and Germany, all passengers aged six and over are required to wear a FFP2 when they fly.

For flights between England, Northern Ireland, Jersey, Isle of Man, Denmark, Finland, Czech Republic, Croatia, Bulgaria, Scotland, Slovenia, Sweden, Gibraltar, Switzerland, Hungary, Iceland and Poland, face masks are optional.

EasyJet's policy states: "It's no longer a legal requirement to wear a mask if you’re flying between any of these destinations. It may be helpful to have a mask with you, but wearing a mask is optional and your choice will be respected.

"Please remember that masks are only optional when you’re flying between the above destinations. If you are flying from Italy to England for example, a FFP2 mask will still be required.:

And for all other routes: "All passengers aged six and over need to wear a suitable face mask (no scarves, face visors or masks with valves) when they fly. You may not be able to board without one. If you are exempt, you'll need to let us know beforehand."

British Airways

BA is reminding travellers to make sure they know the face mask rules for the country they are travelling to.

They said: "As an international airline flying all around the world, we are obliged to ensure our customers continue to comply with local restrictions and meet the requirements of the destination they arrive at.

"Therefore, we ask you to check the requirements of the destination you’re flying to before departing for the airport, as:

  • If you are travelling on our flights, you will be required to wear a mask on board if the destination you are flying to or from requires you to.
  • If you are travelling on our flights, you will be required to wear a mask to disembark the aircraft, and at your arrival airport, if the destination you are flying to requires it."
