Jerod Mayo clarifies recent QB competition comments

New England Patriots coach Jerod Mayo is clarifying his comments from a week ago that rookie quarterback Drake Maye was playing better than Jacoby Brissett

His comments at the time were that Maye had outplayed Brissett up to this point. The coach used both of the quarterback’s full body of work in making the initial assessment. Brissett did not offer much of a response when asked about the comments.

Now, Mayo is clarifying his comments. He spoke on “The Greg Hill Show” and added more context to his words, as transcribed by the Boston Herald’s Doug Kyed.

“I should have given more context to the comment at the time. Drake had more playing time in the preseason than Jacoby, and that was intentional,” said Mayo.

It certainly is quite the changeup for the head coach to be so open about the quarterback competition.

It remains to be seen how the competition will shake out for the rest of the season, but Brissett is undoubtedly the starter for now, as the Patriots get ready to take on the Cincinnati Bengals.
