Jermain Defoe proven right about Harry Kane and Son Heung-min after Tottenham vs Newcastle

Jermain Defoe hailed Harry Kane after the Tottenham striker produced another impressive performance during their 5-1 win over Newcastle on Sunday. Kane wasn’t on the scoresheet but did provide an assist for Matt Doherty’s header which put Spurs 2-1 up early in the second half.

Goals from Ben Davies, Son Heung-min, Emerson Royal and Steven Bergwijn completed the rout after Fabian Schar had given the visitors the lead in north London. The win lifted Spurs up to fourth in the table, however, fifth placed Arsenal are level on points with Antonio Conte’s side and have two games in hand.

Kane has enjoyed an excellent return to form of late after a slow start to the campaign and produced a vintage all-round display to help put the Magpies to the sword. And former Spurs striker Defoe paid tribute to the 28-year-old as the Lilywhites reaffirmed their top four credentials with a third win in a row.

“The way Harry Kane is playing now, with the freedom to roam and drop into pockets. When he gets on the ball, he’s as good a passer as anyone, and now you’ve got runners in behind to score goals," Defoe told Sky Sports whilst discussing Kane's recent renaissance.

“Harry Kane is the main man, but it helps when you’ve got players that have come in and hit the ground running, doing well, because it makes the team stronger.”

Fellow pundit David Ginola echoed Defoe’s view, and also paid tribute to the partnership that Kane has developed with attacking partner Son.

He added: “The relationship between Kane and Son has become very relevant for the club. Every game you see Kane playing as a playmaker, coming back in midfield and trying to reach Son in a good position. It has worked in the past, and it’ll work in the future.

“Harry Kane is not only scoring goals but also assisting goals more and more often. It is important. The quality of his passing to Son is remarkable.”

The prolific duo have become the best goal scoring partnership in Premier League history, combining for 39 goals between them. And their form will be crucial if Spurs are to finish fourth, next up for Conte’s side is a trip to Aston Villa on April 9.
